It seems that you cannot actually remove Internet
Explorer 6 from Windows XP, but you can remove access to
it from the Start Menu by going to the Add/Remove Windows

You do dot want to remove Internet Explorer.
As long as you have Service Pack 1 installed, you can use Set Program
Access Defaults to choose another browser as default.
Start/All Programs/Set Program Access Defaults
