Removing IE7

I'm in need of reinstalling IE7 since Defender can't update its malware
signatures and IE7 gives the error "entry point for WININET.DLL not found" or
something like that. I did check the "Add/Remove" applet with the "Show
Updates" checked, but it's not there anymore. A couple of weeks ago, I had
to do a repair install of XP because I thought I had a HDD crash, thus no IE7
in "Add/Remove," nor any folders with uninstall programs for it.

I try running the install program, only to get the message that IE7 was
already installed. Any help to get rid of or reset whatever settings needed
to install IE7 would be appreciated.

A1. See this KB article which has many suggestions & tips:

How to troubleshoot definition update issues for Windows Defender beta 2:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918355

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender Beta2
support and comments. This is not one of them.

See
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/newsgroups/default.mspx

A2. Before proceeding, please read! =>

1. First try uninstalling via Add/Remove Programs. (Tip: Make sure Show
Updates box is checked.)

If IE7 isn't found there, try the following which is based on the notes of
MVP Sandi Hardmeier:

2. Run the commandline

%windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2$\spuninst\spuninst.exe (IE7 Beta2)

%windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.exe (IE7 Beta2 Preview)

Replace %windir% (above) with the path to your Windows folder, most often
'C:\Windows'. Make sure Show Hidden File and Folders is enabled via Control
Panel > Folder Options.

or

3. Go to the key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Right click on Internet Explorer > New String Value > Name that value
InstalledByUser (the value of the new String should be your User Account
name) > Uninstall IE7 via Add/Remove Programs.

Some software (for example CCleaner) deletes uninstaller directories such as
$NtUninstallie7bet2$ (or $NtUninstallie7bet2p$, for IE& Beta2 Preview). If
the $NtUninstallie7bet2$ folder is empty, or has been deleted completely,
whether by third party software or manually to preserve disk space, you will
*not* be able to remove the Beta 2 Preview via Add/Remove Programs or the
commandline. If running System Restore does not resolve the situation for
you, then your only choice is to stay with the Preview, or format your PC
and install Windows anew. You will not be able to install any future builds
of IE7 while Beta 2 Preview is installed, nor will you be able to run a
Repair Install of XP.

Beta testers of IE7 Public Preview are asked to post their comments &
questions to microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general newsgroup.

hi ,

Here is the quick fix as per ur issue.

Go to C:\windows\INF and locate the IE.INF (often INF folder is hidden, to
show hidden files, From MY COMPUTER go to Tools menu -> Folder options ->
VIew tab - Click on SHOW HIDDEN FILES & FOLDERS).

Right click the IE.inf and click INSTALL... it might ask for few files to
locate, so put the WIN XP Disk or USE the SEARCH & point the location.

Restart the computer & should be able to open IE6, then try installing IE7.

AND for WINIT.DLL ERROR ... Remove Google Toolbar/ all tool bars from
Add/Remove programs.
