Removing folders from desktop when they won't let me delete?

How do I remove folders from desktop that I don't want? I tried deleting
but got an error message saying that I can't delete the folder.

You would first have to stop any application that is using the folder or any
of its content.
However this is a Windows issue and nothing to do with Word.

I still cannot remove this file that I want to delete on desktop. NO it is
not Word problem but I can't get rid of it no matter what. What to do?
