Removing domain from non-existant parent domain

This company was purchased and added to new company's network as a child
domain. They are child.parent.com They have since split from the parent
company and no work was done to remove them from the domain before
connections and ties were cut. They have Windows 2000 server. What is the
best way to clean up AD and remove all ties from the parent domain and make
them just child.com? We are planning eventually to add a Win2003 Server, but
not immediately.

There's no easy way to get out of that situation. The best
way would probably be to create a new domain and migrate the
resources to it. I don't think that you can use the standard
migration tools, because they would presumably want to
retain the Domain relationship that exists.

Cliff, ADMT should be fine to migrate over, since it uses the NetBIOS name
of the source domain.

Thanks.
If the parent domain was still present would it be possible?

I don't see why not since ADMT is not looking for the EA or any FSMOs up
there. Besides, as I mentioned, it uses the source NetBIOS domain name
anyway.

Cool, that's the way to go then. I stand corrected.
