having installed .net 2 web - I cannot use Outlook because Business Contact
Manager now keeps crashing and in doing so brings down Outlook. (This has
never been a problem before)

I only installed Business Contact Manager to see if it were any use a long
time ago. I dont use it.

I cannot see a way to stop Outlook crashing

Try uninstalling BCM, or try disabling it in Outlook; in Registry
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\ look for a folder with
eCRM and set its LoadBehavior to something other than 3 or remove the
folder all together. Note that changing the Registry can be dangerous,
so you may want to back it up first.
