HI,
Would like to know if I should remove one anit virus
software before installing another, or if it would be to
risky, don't want to get any of these virus'es that are
going around. Just want to be real sure, am going to
delete norton anti virus and go to grisoft.
Thank you
BJ

Yes you can generally run multiple AV software concurrently. Tests done in
the past to see what kind of viruses got through which programs showed that
using multiple AV programs gave better protection.

Now, why would you want to remove Norton AV??? That's generally considered
the best around.

Q Because norton isn't running right anymore, don't know
if its because my subscription is about up or what and I
have thought the same thing for a long time, but
beginning to wonder now.

I don't see anything wrong with having more than one installed. I would
turn auto-protect in one. Run the other(s) manually every now and then to
double check the system.

NOTE: Some antivirus programs do not take kindly to a second a/v being
installed. May want to proceed with caution (backup important data, create
restore points, etc).

I run NAV on one computer and AVG on another. I haven't had problems with
either. I would go with the AVG because it is free. When my NAV subscription
runs out, I plan to uninstall it and run AVG.

You really ought to track down what's wrong with NAV. An
about-to-expire subscription does not affect the operation of the
program at all. If NAV "isn't running right," you may have neglected to
update your virus definitions and become infected with one of the
several viruses that disables NAV. Any antivirus program depends on
keeping its signatures uptodate. If you don't have this automatically
scheduled, or at least do it manually but religiously, you're almost
worse off than with no a/v, because you'll think you're protected when
you're not.

Some wouldn't use the likes of Norton even if they are paid!

There are many alternatives to the bloat offered by Norton.
Eg: NOD32, KAV, F-Prot.

alt.comp.virus is a god souce of more info on AV scanners.

Norton went sour on me, too. Suddenly refused to check e-mail and would give
an error message every time that I should pay extortion prices for tech
support to fix it. I found the fix, it's called McAfee.

McAfee is bloatware also and is a prowerhog. If you configure it to scan
all files, then a P4 crawls at a XT speed.

It's recommended that you have 2 anti-programs installed. Run only one
in the background if you want to and use the second as a double check
now and then.
