Removing a link (Vista 32 bit)

Hi,

Sometime ago I installed a file conversion programme on my pc.

Later, I removed this programme.

If I right click on a video, I see an entry which relates to this
removed programme.

How can I remove this entry?

Thanks

You should be more specific. Most of the registry cleaning operations
that CCleaner will offer to perform have nothing at all to do with the
problem, and some can be harmful to their system.

This is poor advice.

No kidding, running ccleaner is the last thing anyone should ever do on
their computer. I would only suggest it if the computer is so screwed up
you are going to have to reformat and reinstall anyways and you can't
possibly hurt anything by trying it.

However, on a well-functioning system, a registry "cleaner" is bound to
do more harm than good and might end up leading you to a reinstall!

I don't agree at all. CCleaner is an excellent program, and I
recommend using it for everything it does *except* for its registry
cleaning function.

I completely agree with that, even on a system that is *not*
well-functioning. Registry cleaners are all snake oil.

Is it possible to remove this dead link manually?

Thanks

I regularly run CrapCleaner on Vista and Win7 and I don't get any problems.
What happened to your Vista installation when you ran it ?
Provide details, if you have any.

I don't feel my registry needs to be "cleaned" therefore, I have no use
for it. Its other stuff, I do manually. If you run the registry cleaner
function, eventually, it will mess up your system, its only a matter of
time.

Read Dave-UK's earlier reply. He told you how to do it.

Not a manual method

Well if you are unwilling or incapable for some reason of
running the simple program I recommended then open
Regedit and do a search using the wording of the context
menu entry as a template. That might throw up some key or
keys that you could delete.
As you haven't named this program it's impossible to be
more specific.

I can of course run the programme.

But I would like to understand how to delete the entry manually in
order to increase my knowldege.

As it happens, I did open Regit and put a string into the search
facility. But amazingly nothing was found. I expected the words used
in the link to be apparent. I will now put in the exact string.

I am at a loss to explain this observation.

The programme I removed is called 'Prism Video File Converter'

Good news.

I put the exact string into Regedit and found the keys (I think that's
what they are called).

On deleting the entries the deadlink has now vanished.

I assume that these entries were introduced at installation. Hence any
re-installation of the programme would restore the keys.

From your first post:
"No kidding, running ccleaner is the last thing anyone should ever do on
their computer."
So you've never run CrapCleaner and yet you come on here telling us
that it will hose your system. You are full of shit.

Nope, not full of shit, just because I haven't done something, doesn't
mean I don't know its bad to do. I've never dropped a match into a can
of gasoline. However, I know it will blow up, because of other
experiences that tell me its a bad thing. Just do a web search on
"registry cleaners" and see how many you find that screw up systems to
the point a reinstall is the only thing that will fix it.
