Removed and Reseated RAM, now pc won't boot

I'm not sure if anybody here might be able to help:

I'm looking at adding more memory to the 512mb that i already have.
Opened my case last night to have a look at what i had, ready to
order the same. Took the ram out of the slot, checked it out, and
replaced it. Cased it back up, reconnected the power and started it
up.

The fans start up with the HD and everything has power, but nothing is
displaying on the screen, just as though it's not booting. No beeps or
anything.

I opened the case again and put the memory stick in the other way up
and tried again. Got exactly the same response from all the hardware,
apart from that it's now accompanied by a continous beeping.
Consequently, i sh*t myself.

It seems to beep one way up, and not the other. I have no idea which
is the correct way around. I also cannot boot my PC and i'm getting
fairly upset with things. I'm all set to go and buy a 1gb stick or
ram, hoping that'll fix it, but don't want the expense if i can just
go and buy a second 512mb, and most of all, i just want it to at
least start with the 512mb i have so i can live in peace again :(

I wasn't wearing an antistatic strap, but made sure i got rid of
static. Could i have fried the ram?

Or, if i haven't fried the ram, is there anything else that may be
wrong? i've looked around for help, but most say to check that it's
seated properly, and i'm sure that it is.

helphelphelp. please.

Could it actually be booting and there be a problem with the video
card?

i'm running the 512mb on a Jetway S755MAX. AMD ATHLON 64 3200+, if
that helps.

Thankyou so much in advance for any help offered.

Memory modules are keyed; they only go one way.
So you may not have actually pushed the module down into
the slot. Sometimes a module needs a pretty hard push. Read
and follow the instructions that (hopefully) came with the
memory. Or, ask someone who has done it to show you.

Memory goes in one way only. If you're installing it the other way then
you're not seating the memory correctly. The slot is slightly off center
and the clips should snap into place automatically when the memory is
seated correctly. Machines usually beep once with memory seating problems.

I read that 2x512 sticks perform better than 1x1024 stick.

What's an anti-static strap? Just kidding , I've dropped memory and it
still worked. Bad memory chips crap out because of faulty manufacturing
but generally not from static just make sure you unplug the PC before
working on it.

Here is a useless post, but right on the money.....You shouldn't be
'playing' inside your rig. Find a friend or someone to help you out. You may
have statically damaged, broke the memory slot or worse. Hopefully it will
be just a lesson in memory installation. With just a little research(google)
'before' attempting something, that you obviously have had no experience
with, would have left you much better off. That goes for anything you do
that is unknown.

Let me get down from the soapbox.......

Reinstall the memory the proper way.Use a light to see the keys in the
memory slot if need be.The beeps are from the memory being installed
wrong.Reseat the vid card and Ide cables while in there.Probably
bumped something loose.
