Remove Unused Masters

My Powerpoint templates have multiple masters, however when I save the
slide/presentation, Powerpoint does not automatically remove the unused
masters so my file sizes are large. I have turned off "Preserve Master" on
all the masters but it makes no difference, I get the same result. Therefore
I have to find and manually remove the unused masters. Engineers will be
using these templates and will not want to find and remove unused masters
every time they create a slide or presentation (neither would I for that
matter).

Is there a way for Powerpoint to automatically remove unused slide masters
so the user doesn't have to?

Hi Al

I'm afraid I don't know of a way to do that but another approach is to ask
the question 'why are the masters so big?'. I use multiple masters a lot and
don't have the problem you describe.

Images are (in my experience) usually to blame for large file sizes so try
cut, edit-> paste special-> jpg or png and see if that helps.

Other reasons for large file sizes can be seen here:

Hi Lucy.

We actually don't have many graphics in our masters. Just a small logo or
two, a colored line or two, and maybe 2 or 3 words of text, depending on the
master. After reading your response, I went back and checked the logo file
sizes and they were reasonably small. I think the reason the template size is
larger (3.6MB) is because we have and need a good number of slide masters
(30...and counting, which includes the title masters of course, which also
have the same logos, lines etc).

If I cut the template in half to create two templates it would help a little
but the file sizes will still be a good deal larger than they otherwise would
be. Considering we have thousands of slides, this would be a problem.

I guess if Microsoft doesn't have a way to automatically remove unused
masters, then, we will have to remove them all manually.

Thanks Lucy, I appreciate the response. : )

Wow, 30+ masters?

If it's not too confidential/sensitive send me a copy and I'll see if I can
suggest anything.
