A scanner i used to have is still appearing on device lists in photo editing
programs.

I have removed the software for it and it does not appear in the Scanners
and Camera list in the control panel. Yet, it still is listed as a device in
programs like Adobe Photoshop. It doesn't not come up in the device manager
and it is not listed in my hardware profiles.

Can anyone please offer help?

Maybe, Add a System level environment variable:
DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
and set it's value to 1. Then open Device Manager. Click View &
check/tick the option "Show Hidden Devices" & check
the Imaging devices category. If it (Old Scanner) is still in the
table and shown in diminished color - then Uninstall and recheck
your applications.

To display hidden devices, non-Plug and Play devices, and devices not
attached to the computer (commonly known as "ghosted" or "phantom" devices)
Save the following two lines as a file then execute.

--------------------------setdev.bat---------------------
set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
start devmgmt.msc
---------------------------------------------------------

Then, View|Show Hidden Devices to remove or reconfigure these devices. Do
not edit the registry.

Thanks for for this info. Only thing is, I don't know a lot about the
technical side of computers. Could you please tell me how to add a system
level environment variable and set it's value to 1?

Right Click the My Computer Icon, when the Context menu opens
left click on Properties. Click the Advanced (TAB). Click the button
near the bottom of the details box that says "Environment Variables".
The details box has two sections. You want to use the bottom half
one for System wide variables. Click the New button. Type in the
name DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices then set the value to 1
and click OK. Then follow the steps from the previous posting.

Thanks for explaining how to add a system level environment variable etc. I
did what you suggested and the scanner came up under imaging device in the
device manager. I uninstalled it and when checking my applications it was
still listed as a device. Do you have any more suggestions?

I tried what you suggested below, however the scanner is still appearing in
my applications. Do you have any other ideas that I could try?

Programs that retain devices for use would likely need to be edited in
the Registry. Most likely you would find the devices in a sub-tree key
of HKey_Local_Machine\Software\'CompanyName' and
HKey_CurrentUser\Software\'CompanyName
If you modify or remove any keys be SURE to export them to a .Reg
(Text/Importable) in case you want to reverse or undo your changes.
You might also locate the data by doing a search for the Device Mgr
identifier string of the Scanner ( for example Canon N6520)

You might uninstall, restart and reinstall the application so as to
reinitialize the hardware list within the application or try asking them
here.

I found a hidden folder under My Computer called CanoScan (which is the name
the appears in applications lists). Do you think deleting this would be the
right thing to do?

I believe you've located your issue. Best I remember there are a few
other CanoScan folders - perhaps one in the All Users\Application
Data folder and another in each user profile in the same tree. I would
remove them all, reboot and see if that resolves it.

Thank you so much for all your help on this annoying issue. I think the thing
that was causing the scanner to register was a folder in a folder (twain_32)
under WINDOWS. I deleted the folder and upon checking my applications the
scanner was gone!!
Thanks once again!
