How do I remove an underscore line that I already have in a document.
I am trying to edit my book. I made a line like this__________
and pressed enter to separate two portions of text. Now I can't back space
and delete.

Most lines hard to delete are either paragraph borders (which is most
likely in your case, as a result of AutoCorrect) or drawn lines.

Select the paragraph before and after the line, and hit CTRL-Q is a good
method to get rid of lines (and a lot of other paragraph properties :))
which are not part of the definition of the style in use. If that's too
much "adherence" for you, go to Format | Borders and Shading and apply
no lines.

In case it's a drawn line, use the white arrow in the Drawing toolbar to
select the thing and ultimately get rid of it (DEL).
