Remove All Mail from IMAP account

Jeff

I just configured Vista's Windows mail to hook up with my gmail account via
IMAP. I have my emails stored in a folder structure (gmail calls them
"labels"), which was recreated and all the emails downloaded. So far, so
good. But then WinMail downloaded all 1700 emails again in the All Mail
folder.

I bought a small SDD drive for my new machine and do not want all the emails
stored locally twice. How do I configure WinMail to synchronize my folders,
but not the All Mail folder, and then I can delete the All Mail folder? Or
are there any other options I can use?

Thanks

Where did this "All Mail" folder come from? Windows Mail doesn't
create it, and I don't think Gmail does either.
Right-click on the imap.Gmail.com main folder name and select
IMAP folders. You can hide folders you don't want to see.
You can also right-click on individual mail folders and configure them
not to synchronize.

Hi Gary. The Show/Hide IMAP Folders window (which I get by selecting "IMAP
folders") shows a hierarchy like this:
Inbox
Sent Items
Deleted Items
Drafts
Junk E-mail
[Gmail]
|->All Mail
|->Drafts
|->Sent Mail
|->Spam
|->Starred
|->Trash

I did not create the hierarchy shown, it was all generated by Google.

I did what you said and unsynchronized the [Gmail] folder.

I'm not entirely clear on what's happening here. Can I now delete the emails
in the All Mail folder without losing them permanenty? Can I do the same in
the All Mail folder when using Google on the web?

Thanks for your help, Gary. I've noticed you are a great resource in this
forum.

Hi Jeff. I don't have Gmail IMAP, only Gmail POP.
Someone who is familiar with that "All Mail" folder may be able to answer
your questions about it, or you can try asking Gmail support.

One correction: you cannot ask Gmail support.
I have never found any way to contact them to ask a question (of course, I
haven't looked recently). :)
