As a average user, can I remove win 2000 pro and reinstall 98 back on my system? What is required or what are the steps?

I replaced 98 last fall when heard no more support, and since then had several problems. Main one being, OS not compatible with MSN and can not get on the net. Also every time I shut off pc, the printer drivers have to be reloaded to get them to work and the standby/ hibernate mode has always been screwed.

Thank you for any help, as I would like to also use all the old games I had!!! and I can not afford $100 plus to take to shop to have it reformatted and OS installed.

The task can be relatively easy or very complex...it depends on your current configuration.

First, you obviously are aware that you can't downgrade an OS the way one upgrades it, i.e., a clean installation is required in this case.

If you have a lot of applications installed, you'll have to backup the data from them that you want to load back. For best results, make a list.

If you have any IE Favorites and/or e-mail messages you want to backup and restore, post back with e-mail client/version used. You may also want to backup IE cookies, in case you have signed-up to any special websites.

After you have backed all of the data you need from the drive it can be wiped clean. Since it's Win2000, I assume that it's formatted in NTFS. One of the easiest ways to purge the drive using NTFS partitions is with a utility called delpart (it's an NT tool). You can get it here:

Going nuts because you can't fdisk a Windows 2000, NT, or XP drive?....
http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm

Now you're ready to partition and format the drive. You'll need to make a boot disc for Win98 if you don't have one from the previous installation. You'll use FDISK to create the partition(s) and FORMAT to format them.(There are simpler ways to do this using drive mfg software, post back if you need to know about this) All detailed installation instructions are contained in this MSKB article:

How to Install Windows 98 on a Computer with No Operating System

If you need further clarification, post back in this same thread.
