Removal of hardware

I'm installing XP-Pro on some custom equipment. In the resent past, I've
been able to load the OS and then remove the CD-ROM drive. But on the copies
of the OS I just purchased when I try this I get a BSOD on boot up with the
error that the harddrive can't be mounted. Is there something different
about the latest version and is there anything that can be done?

Is the hard drive sharing a IDE controller with the CD-ROM drive? If so, get
another IDE cable and let the CD-ROM have the secondary ide channel and the
hard drive connect to the primary ide channel on the motherboard.
