removable drive letter assignment

I am running win XP home that is a connected to a novell network server.
This assigns network maps on e:, f:, g:, p:, s: and z: all of which are
required for various applications.

However one of my jobs is to back up data files off the server, i do this
with a IDE-USB drive caddy. Unfortunatly whenever i plug this in (and my
cruzer mini usb drive for that matter) windows xp always assigns it the drive
letter e:, this conflicts with novell, disconnects me from that network map,
and then the drive does not work unless i go to disk manager in the mmc and
switch it to u: (random letter). Then i have to relog on to the novell
server, which is a bit of an annoyance multiple times a day.

Is there any way to force windows to give removable drives letters from say
u: upwards, that way it will not immediatly conflict.

I have searched around but can find little on the subject

Cheers

Plug your usb stick in, right click My Computer | Click Manage | Click Disk
Management | Right Click on the USB drive and select Change drive letter.

Change the drive letter to the one you would like to use and click ok. The
usb drive letter should now be changed and this should be retained when you
next plug it in.

This sounds like the easy, manual way out!
Very complicated if you use USB drives, cameras, phones etc. and you
expect plug and play.

There must be a way, where XP automatically chooses the next free
letter...???

Isn't there? Anyone?
