Remotedesktop with XP Home - It works (but with limitations?)

A

Andrih

Hi,

Microsoft sais: Remotedesktop is only available in Windows XP Pro.
I know: Remotedesktop works also for Windows XP Home. In our
Configuration a Invitation is created on a Windows XP Home
Installation an the Invitation is executed on an Windows XP Pro
Machine, and this works (it workes also with Windows Messenger)!

But there is no posibility to check or uncheck this feature in Windows
XP Home. Under "Systemproperties->Remote" there is missing the
checkbox "Allow users to connect remotely" , but in Windows XP Pro it
is available? This makes no sense to me!

Now our Problem: We can only start the Remoteconnection to the Windows
XP Home Installation when there is no ICS active on the Network that
needs remotesupport. but Microsoft sais, it works with ICS (we
configured ICS correctly with the IP Address where the Remoteservice
should run).

Is this because Remotedesktop with Windows XP Home workes only when
there is an direct connection? This all sounds very strange to me!

Thanks in Advance!

I think your mixing up Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance...

From the FAQ...

Q. What are the differences between Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance?
A. Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance use the same underlying technology, but there are
differences between these features.

a.. Remote Desktop allows access to a remote Windows computer. For example, when you are at another
computer you can use Remote Desktop to connect to your work computer from home and have access to
files and applications.
b.. Remote Assistance allows a helper to use an Internet connection to access your computer to
provide assistance. The helper views your computer's screen and communicates through a chat box. The
helper can remotely control your computer to resolve a problem.

Remote Assistance...

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/focuson/remoteassist.asp

You need to forward/open TCP Port 3389 in the ICF in order to use Remote Desktop. Depending on how
the Remote Assistance invitation is extended, you also may need to forward/open TCP Port 3389 for
Remote Assistance...You may need to modify the RCTICKET field in the invitation file to account for
the NAT function of the router if the router is *NOT* UPnP compatible...

Thank you!

I really mixed it up, for me, it was the same, now i understand.

We want to use Remote Assistance in the following scenario, what
doesn´t work:
The Novice is the Computer has an ICS DSL Broadband Connection to
Internet (we cannot deactivate ICS, because other Hosts in the ICS
Network need Internet).
The Administrator is connected directly to Internet (no router). Alle
Firewalls are deactivated.
The Novice calls for help throug Windows Messenger or by file.
The ICS has no firewall activated, and in its properties, the IP
Address of the Novice PC is entered for the Remotedesktop Service.

With this configuration there comes an insignificant error, both per
Windows Messenger or per file.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance again,

André

Thank you again.

In our ICS Settings, there is still an entry for Port
3389 called "Remotedesktop". This rule was activated and
there was still the ip of the Novice PC entered.
Now i changed it into the netbios name, with the same
result.

The original Error Message was:
Die Remoteunterstützungsverbindung konnte nicht
hergestellt werden, weil der Remotehostname nicht
aufgelöst werden konnte. Wiederholen Sie den Vorgang.
in English:
The Remote Assistance connection could not be
established, because the Remotehostname could not be
resolved. Please try again later.
When we deactivated the Checkbox for Remotedesktop in ICS
Settings, the same Error

Then we activated the Checkbox for Remotedesktop in the
ICS and changed the netbiosname to the name of a windows
XP Pro Host in the ICS Network. And this worked over
Messenger.

The problem is, that i need to connect to the xp Home
Host, and this dosn´t work, although remoteassistance is
fully integrated in windows xp home.

Any ideas how to get this work with the xp home host, or
is the configuration correct?

Thanks in advance

André

What is the error message?

You can try to open TCP Port 3389 on the ICS box using
that machines NetBIOS name as the target.

You might try the email or file method for issuing the invitation and edit the RCTICKET field in the
invitation file to reflect the public IP of the Novice machine.
