Remote vpn

I can use xp-pro remote desktop to access my 2000 server across the internet
but cannot transfer files. I decided to setup a vpn and can connect but
cannot see the server in networking and cannot ping it.

I finally found that my xp ras connection is getting an ip address from the
2000 server in the 192.168.0.xx range. My internet xp router is using
192.168.1.xx range. I am using dhcp for addresses on both ends.

If I change my xp address to a static 192.168.0.xx, I loose connectivity
with my router and loose my internet connection.

Can anyone suggest a solution for me?

Thanks

Try specifying a fixed IP address for your VPN session.

Tks for the response.

If I give the vpn a static address in the range of my remote router I get
the message: 'The requested address was rejected by the server'. Obviously it
doesn't like the remote address being on another network.

When I connect with remote desktop there is no ras adapter loaded.
Obviously it doesn't use one and it works fine.

You must tweak the VPN connection on the host so that
it allows the remote user to specify his own IP address.

Thanks Pegasus!! You are a very bright guy. No wonder you are an MVP.

The whole process seem simple now. But it wasn't.
First you have to setup a login account.
Then I setup the 2000 server RAS range 192.168.1.4 - 192.168.1.5
Chap v2

On static IP routes I checked 'enable ip router manager also 'enable router
discovery'

When it connects ipconfig on the remote shows 192.168.1.4 as the server and
..5 as the remote ip.

after a few times running nbtstat -A with the ip address of the home card
in the server, in this case 192.168.0.102 the home configuration shows up on
the remote compter and i am then able to connect by entering the
\\nameOftheRemoteComputer in the run box.
