Remote TS disconnect issues...

We have a windows 2000 Terminal Server that we use to host both internal and
external connections.

We are using a mix of XP and Win98 machines running the RDP 5.2 client to
connect to the TS.

This morning while in a sales meeting, I discovered that several of the
salepeople who log on remotely from home have been experiencing disconnects.
Basically, their screen will freeze and then the client reports
they have been disconnected. They have to wait a few minutes before logging
in again, but when they get logged back in, no problem, they are right back
where they left off. However, they then reported that recently it seems that
every 5-10 minutes they are being kicked off.

We have absolutely no problems internally with disconnects so I suppose it
is safe to say that it must be a data communication issue and really nothing
to do with the server as the TS doesn't know (and doesn't care) who is
remote and who is not...

They also report that their own internet connection remains active through
the whole thing, so it is safe to say it is not the local connection to
their provider causing the problem.

Has anyone else had this problem? I wonder if it has something to do with
the RDP client not interpreting the data from the server correctly... Is
there a better client or an upgraded client maybe? I am at a loss to figure
out why this is happening. (and no events are being recorded in the event
log either)

As well, users report a lag every so often where the screen will freeze and
then a couple seconds later, the line they had been typing away on fills
in... This I believe is a know issue and does not happen when logged on
locally - only remotely...

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

Brad

Brad,

I recently began to experience the same issue with one of
our TS's, and the symptons are almost identical. I have a
WAN point-to-point T-1 connection between locations and
connections to other TS's are fine, just this one system.
I have researched TechNet with so success.

I have had some of the users state that just before they get the disconnect,
their screen/mouse has froze. This is also another issue reported with
remote users that state when they are online, from time to time the screen
will freeze and then in 5 seconds or so, presto, they are back in business
again. I wonder if the RDP client is seeing this as some sort of a data
problem and in some cases is disconnecting the session. The session remains
active on the server so there was no problem there... It's got to be
something to do with that client. Maybe there is a better one?

Having the same issue here (3+ months). Very severe
problems with Compaq T30 Thin clients running CE. Screen
becomes unresponsive from 10-15 seconds up to as long as 7
minutes (2-4 minutes not uncommon). No problems with
remote XP machines running remote desktop and no problems
with the thin clients that are on the same subnet as the
server. I am curious what term server version is causing
the problem. I believe my issue may have started when I
went to Windows 2000 SP4 but I am not sure. I have
applied some post sp4 hot fixes with no success. Recently
I set up a test environment with an additional router
connected with a cross over T1 line to simulate the wan
environment. Thin clients attached to the test
environment exhibit the identical symptoms which would
indicate that it is not a circuit problem.

We have the same Problem on Windows2003 Server with the latest RDP client. However, only connections through VPN are affected. Also have the problem that sometines the RDP client shuts down on its own. Session on the TS are not affected.
