Remote Registry Security - A bug?

J

Julian Simpson

Can anyone help?

I was trying to access the registry on XP remotely using
MBSAFU. It was returning an error message. So, a bit of
digging turns up a KB artical 153183, which I look at and
check out.

Now, following the suggestions didnt work BUT, setting my
own security permissions on the registry key *sort of*
did:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\Wi
nreg

What I would have expected was for the local admin group
to give me permission to this key. It didnt. Nor did
adding my domain account. What did work was adding the
empty local user group.........!!!!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Any bright ideas, cause I think this reeks of
MS "Security" Bugdom.

Regards

JS.

ps. Responses by email please. Cheers.

Actually, if I have followed you, it reeks of security
misconfiguration. The winreg key controls groups
allowed remote access to the registry, and you seem
to have granted it to null sessions / anonymous access.
