remote logon question

what is the best approach for a laptop to login from home into a standard
desktop pc at work. (no server).
 
to be more specific.....the PC at the workplace does not have a static ip
address. Do I have to have a static IP? And will I need a vpn enabled
passthrough router at the work pc?
