I am trying to set up remote desktop/assistance to help my 90 year old Mom with her new DELL computer. Dell says they don't have a clue how it works and didn't know it was in XP. I have firewalls down in both computers and am using the connect program under accesories/communication/remote connection. I am using Mom's correct DNS number to search for it. Any ideas?

Hi,

To connect to another computer using R.Desktop the computer [on the other end] must be running XP Professional. XP Home does not have Remote Desktop, only has Remote Assistance.
You need to use the IP address of the other XP Pro computer. You need to ask the person to use IPCONFIG command and find the IP address.

Remote Assistance:
If you are interested in trying a Remote Assistance, read these links below:

Use Remote Assistance through a firewall:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...entserver/ra_server_close_port.asp?frame=true

Remote Desktop uses the same TCP port as well.

NOTE: Remote Assistance enables the Expert and the requester to view the screen simultaneously. Whereas Remote Desktop logs out the user to the Welcome Screen and the expert alone can see the screen [as if you are working in your computer].

If you prefer Remote Assistance, use invitation file method. IMHO, it's the easiest.

Hey Guy. I really appreciate the info. I remember hearing that Pro had more in this area than Home. I managed to do it with Messenger but it was needlessly difficult. Using PcAnywhere I have had no luck at all. I (hopefully) am trying to set up a one click for Mom to get asistance. It's really sad. After maybe two hours she thinks she should have mastered the computer. I explained it took me a couple years of hours each day before I felt remotely competant.

There are similar third-party utils such as VNC, DameWare RemoteControl etc. You might consider using those as well.
