Remote Desktop Settings in a Network

Hi everyone, me and a friend have a home network and we
are connected using a DSL modem. It is my understanding
that that we need to enable port 3389. We did that and
still that does not work. Can some one give me a hand.

What is the network configuration? Where are the two machines in relation
to each other? What OS are the two boxes and which is trying to connect to
which?
