Remote Desktop logoff failure.

Additional elaboration:
What occurs when I log off is the absence of any response at the remote
computer, e.g., the remote computer desktop does not disappear, no matter how
many times I attempt a LOGOFF, SHUTDOWN, RESTART. DISCONNECT appears to
work. In fact, a user at the remote location indicated the computer wasn't
"locked."

Have you tried to reboot the remote machine?

Yes. In fact, I worked with another operator at the remote computer
yesterday. The LOGOFF failed, even after rebooting the remote computer.

On the remote PC try this command at the command line. Reboot the PC
afterwards...

regsvr32 remotepg.dll

I'll give it a try. What I have done is get another operator at a separate
workstation to Remote Desktop connect, logon, then logoff. He had no
difficulties getting in & out, including the closure of the remote computer's
desktop & the reappearance of the Remote Desktop connection window.
Perhaps the Achilles' Heel is the computer I'm using, whose hard drive I
plan to reformat next week & reinstall XP (and all its updates).
Does this information alter your suggestion?

I would try the reregister on your client machine since that is obviously
the box that is hosed up so to speak. If your going to reformat anyway then
that also will obviously solve a lot of issues...:)
