remote desktop disappears during initial connection

Trying to run remote desktop externally and internally to my xp
machine. No matter what station i try to rd from i get the same
result. The rd is enabled on the target workstation. So i try to rd,
type in the destination, and it starts to connect and then the window
just disappears. any suggestions would be a big help.
