Remote desktop connection through dsl modems

Hi all from Australia
I have read articles about RDC from various sources, including Microsoft,
but none make mention of accessing a remote host through a DSL modem.
In my case the workstation to be accessed is a stand alone machine not on a
private LAN, DHCP is enabled with a broadband connection through a single
port DSL modem, which has the option of ethernet and usb connection between
that and the PC.
With regard to my own broadband connection, I didn't use the ISP software, I
set up the connection through the modem interface.
When i use the ipconfig /all command I get the IP address as 58.104.xxx.xxx
this address is the same as the one shown in my LAN connection status and
also the same as the IP address from http://www.whatismyip.com/
Two questions:
1) Does this mean that RDC can be made by using the IP address as shown in
the remote PC's ipconfig /all readout, without any configuration of the DSL
modem?
2) If not, what DSL modem configuration is required in order to enable RDC
through this gateway?
I hope someone can assist ... thanks and regards

Hello back from Oklahoma...

Yes, given the IP test results you have posted it means the DSL modem is
passing all ports through it straight to your PC. Some DSL modems are also
routers and must be configured for port forwarding or put into a bridge
mode. It appears yours is the latter case...so no reconfiguration should be
needed.

So call your home PC using the 58.104.X.X address. If your ISP provides a
dynamic address, ie. one that changes if you reboot your PC, you might look
into using a dynamic naming service like No-IP.com to map a fully qualified
domain name (FQDN) or alias to your assigned IP. You can then call using the
alias. Go to http://www.no-ip.com for details.

Lastly make sure your PC is running the XP SP2 Windows Firewall or some
other personal firewall software since its connected directly to the public
internet. You need to make sure TCP Port 3389 is opened on the firewall in
order to connect with Remote Desktop.
