Remote Desktop behind a router

Guest

I have installed remote desk top and I am already installed as the user being
the administrater. I have switched to a static IP on the computer. I have a
Linksys router. the DCHP is disabled, the port 3389 is forwarded to my
computers static IP. The router has a static IP supplied by the ISP, I have a
Motorola SB5120 surfboard modem contected to the cable company.

I go to the client computer and receive error "the specified computer
cannopt be found..." I have tried the computer name only. I have tried
\\(computer IP)\comp name. I have tried Http: etc.

Obviously, I am stimied. Please help.

Open remote desktop client and type in the IP address from the ISP not the
internal address of the PC.

From the LAN, use the internal IP address. From the WAN use the external IP
address. Example - 192.168.1.X or 67.23.121.X. This format "\\(computer
IP)\comp name" is incorrect.

You don't use a web browser or a path like that for "remote desktop".

Open the "Remote Desktop" connection, type in the "Public IP" of your
internet address, it should prompt for user/password/domain.

One word of caution - RD ports are scanned quite often, thousands of
probes per day, it's best to not use the default RD port and to actually
setup a VPN instead and then use RD to the workstations private IP.

Make sure that you are using a LONG user name and a LONG password.
