I'm getting this really odd "informational" error. My NIC
card is dropping its connection. I look at the System
Event Viewer and I see this:

The connection to ************* made by user
************** using device PPPoE6-0 was disconnected.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

When I jump to the help and support area, I see this

Some interesting information on this Event number at http://www.eventid.net
Check it out. It may be of some help.

Thanks Sharon. That was very interesting. I tweaked a couple of IE
settings and hopfully it will work..

PS - I haven't had a disconnect since I "unfirewalled" my Network Connection
so that may be an idea as well.

Good luck, Josh. I hope you're tweaking holds for you.
(PS: No need for the firewall to be active on the local network so
disabling that was a good move on your part.)

Sharon,

I had another problem with my Wave Mixer drivers. When I looked at
the error report I saw that my pagefile was suspect. So I posted a
note up on one of these sites and did what the person who responded to
me said to do. I felt comfortable mucking with pagefile.sys since I
am in the IT industry any way. But after I made the recommended
changes, my PC would not boot to completion, nor could I run anything.
I could not even get to the point where I could undo what I had done.
So basically I had to test the Compaq Recovery process to re-stage my
machine from the ground up. Now I'm having a stupid problem with
Windows Messenger that I can't resolve. I can't sign in with my
e-mail/password (passport) and when I try to retrieve it from the MSN
site, I get one of those funky "This site is not available" pages.
However, my e-mail address is correct.. I know this because I am able
to log in from other places.

Sorry... just venting... I'm beginning to wonder if the purchase I
made was worth it. I'm having more problems with WinXP than with
WinME when it first came out.

If everyone measured their like/dislike of Windows XP based on Windows
Messenger - we would all hate it. ;^)

The Messenger servers have been flakey for almost 2 weeks now. An error
trying to log on is usually "fixed" an hour later using the old fashioned solution
of "try logging on later."

That's an odd story about the pagefile. XP is perfectly capable of running
without a pagefile on C: It appears that something else on that system is
expecting to find a C:\pagefile.sys Perhaps one of the startup programs?

If you end up experimenting here again later, try leaving a minimal
swapfile on C: and moving the bulk of it to another hard drive. Minimal:
25MB allows for the creation of a "minidump file" if Error Reporting is
enabled. Personally, I have C: set for 100MB and the rest is on H: (first
partition of another drive).

Well it looks like my problems are solved so far. I've had one disconnect
that I can't explain. EventID 20159 is what shows in my event log. And my
messenger woes were aleviated by installing wersion 5.0 (which failed and
subsequently removed 4.7...I don't know how this happened)... and I ended up
installing MSN Messenger and that works fantastically.

Very cool. Glad to hear that all is working again. Thanks for letting us
know. :)
