Remote Access to server

I would like to control my server from remote locations across the internet.
A complication is our server is separated from the internet by a proxy
server.

What is the easiest, yet secure, way to do this?

We use a VPN to do that very thing.
Ours is "Alta Vist Tunnel" but I am sure there are others out there.

Set up an encrypted VPN tunnel. L2TP + IPSec is a favourite. You'll have to
configure the proxy to allow the relevent ports through.
