Remember Password - does Not after shutdown

Jimquist

My computer is not "remembering" my sign-in information for Face Book and
Windows Live Messenger. It will automatically log me in and out during my
current Windows XP session but after shutdown and restart of the system, it
is necessary to key in my log in information again.
This feature was working until just a few days ago. I do check the
"Remember me", "Remember my password" and "Sign me in automatically" boxes.
It must be working in some instances as I am automatically logged into
Windows Live Hotmail.
I'm using XP-home with SP3 with patches of 9/8 installed.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware found and cleaned "Spyware.Banker" shortly before
I noticed this problem with automatic login was not working.
Any suggestions to get back the easy way to log in?
thanks, Jim

That infection is said to specifically target saved browser login and
password information. (Spyware.Banker)

I would not download a third party application to resolve an issue
that should be working in the first place, unless that makes sense to
you.

What is the browser that exhibits this problem?

I would run MBAM again and then SAS:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

These can be uninstalled later if desired.

The fact that some work and some don't means something is still not
right.

You may have to accept the unpleasant fact that all of your user/
password information has been compromised and then use the tools built
in to your unspecified browser to clear all temporary browser
information including all usernames and passwords (in your best
interest). Then the user names and passwords will all have to be
entered and remembered by the browser again.

That is what that malware targets and you know it was on your system.

Or you can download the third party application and never know for
sure.

Painful at first, but it will catch up eventually.

Hi,

See line 223 (right hand side):
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Add info if using .Net:

Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2. Once there:

Advanced, Manage Passwords. Or, Control Panel, User Accounts, select a user
then Manage my network passwords.

..Net Passport Member Services: http://memberservices.passport.net/

Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2. Advanced/Manage
Passwords/Remove.

Tip:

Add Control Userpasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

You can also check here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService\ListCache\.NET
Messenger Service. In the right pane, Identity Name

Enable or Disable Storage of .Net Passwords (Line 223) Right hand side

Thanks Jose,
I'm not too keen either, at paying good money for an add on program to do
what my machine should already do.
I'm using IE7 - fully patched.
That malware *Super.Banker* arrived unbeknownst to AVG free. Subsequent
scans
by AVG free and MBAM do not reveal any problems.
I installed and gave SAS a whirl and it detected 1550 tracking cookies, but
nothing more serious.

Is there a way to find out which of my user names and passwords have been
retained by XP? or IE?
I'm thinking it may not be necessary to change those passwords when
"Remembering" and "Log me in Automatically" is not an option.

I'm still interested in a "fix" to get "Remember Me" and "Log me in
automatically" working again.
Thanks again, Jim

Thank you Kelly (I think ;-)
I'm not too sure I understand all of your instructions, so I'll put my
hurting brain cell to bed and take another look tomorrow and see if anything
seeps through.
