Many thanks for the positive try, but although there is a + against the
CD-RW Drive (E, when I click on the + no files are produced at all. This
could be the reason why a Systems Restore also failed to correct this fault.
|I tried the installation CD of Win.XPPro to do a repair job, but of course
I cannot get it started. Any other ideas?
A XP repair is usually run from the CD by starting the system with the CD in
place. If you have entered the BIOS and made the CD drive as 1st boot choice
your system should display a message that states "push any key to start from
CD" at which point the XP installation will start...go tru the steps for a
new installation and watch for the message push R for Repair.
If you have Pro SP2 installed but are using a CD without SP2 you will get an
error message.XP will not downgrade itself. You would have to Slipstream SP2
update into your Original XP in order to do a repair installation.
Do a google on Slipstream and you will find free programs that do this as
well as detailed instructions. You would of course have to able to use your
CD burner to do this.

Many thanks for such a comprehensive reply. It occurred to me that instead
of going through all the rigmarole of Slipstreaming SP2 it would be easier
to eliminate it first through Add/Remove. I have SP2 on a CD, which could be
reinstalled after the repair job? What do you think?
I think if you are going that route your asking for more problems....
The slipstreaming procedure is fairly easy to do and the next time you have
problems it will be available for use quite easily. http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm
