Reloading windows XP

I've just spent some time re-loading Windows XP on my 3 year old Evesham
desktop PC, having decided to replace it with a Dell. I really only want it
to act as a backup for things like scanning etc, as my broadband access is in
a different part of the house. Having succeeded (largely), it now tells me I
need to activate this in 28 days, and I'm assuming that this would need to be
done over the internet. I haven't succeeded in setting up brroadband access
on the PC - is there any other way of activating without having to bring the
whole package downstairs, work out how to get on the net and go through it
that way?

I did look on the Microsoft website, but they seem to want £46 just for an
email support ....

any help greatly appreciated.

There should be a choice of phone activation. And no, you don't have
to pay money to activate.

Use phone activation.

You can activate over the phone. To do this I'm pretty sure you just
start the activation process on the computer, and when it discovers
you're not on the net it will offer you the option to call in your
activation and give you the phone number.

Thanks guys - have looked on the MSN website, and there is a UK MSN phone
number so I'll give them a call.

Yes, over the telephone. Just click the activate button and select activate
by phone (Microsoft do not charge you). You will then select your country
and a free phone (toll free) number will appear. Dial that number and then
go through the activation wizard. You 'do' need to be in front of your PC
because you need to input the numbers off your PC screen into your telephone
touchpad and then another set of numbers will be read out to you by the
automated system which you have to type into the dialogue box which appears
on your PC screen.

If you have any problems 'do not' hang up. If you wait a while you will be
put through to a 'real' person who will guide you through the activation.
Again there is no charge for this service.
