Reloaded XP Home Windows Update Greyed

Client brought Dell notebook with reloaded XP Home
(original disks reloaded due to broken kernal). Windows
Update page gives a greyed "Install Updates" and appears
to never check for updates. NO ERROR is ever given.

Note that the machine did not have the license key
installed correctly (since corrected) and the related
background and update services were not started (since
corrected).

Did you try installing the SP2 upgrade from a CD to see if this would fix
the problem? The SP2 upgarde should just do its thing and install then you
can check further.
