reload xp prof.

my sys. restore does not work. will not restore to highlited points or will
not restore create points from the day prior. It will only work if i create a
point and use it 15 min. later. then it will restore.
It worked fine in my old computer but not in the new one that the computer
store loaded for me. They used my cd.
So my question is I want to reload xp prof. What do i have to do first?
Back up files? Not sure the easiest and fastest way to back up files
Im older and im computer scared to do too much without screwing up esp. that
i cannot use RESTORE

1st R.click my computer,properties,system restore,turn off restore,close out
properties,go to run,type:cmd In cmd type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,
type:CLEANMGR Run disk clean up,after type:EXIT Restart computer.Back in
xp turn on restore in properties,after go to tools,restore,create a restore
point.
