reload cd

Hi, my hard drive has developed a physical fault so I have got another one to
run the os (which was XP home) and an external hard drive to transfer the
files to. The problem is the cd that came from the manufacturer (Time - now
defunct) will only reload onto the original hard drive. I've been given
another os (xp pro) to use just so i can try to transfer the data across but
can't get usb 2.0 to work to use the external hard drive (it's 130gb of data
that's on the original hard drive) as its not genuine. I do own a genuine
copy of xp home (which i have reloaded successfully before, and has always
been fine with all updates from windowsupdates incl sp1 and sp2), but as i
said it will only load onto the hard drive that is dodgy. Please can somebody
help me to resolve this?
Thank you,
Duncan Haynes

Hi ... If I understand you correctly your new hard drive has the xp pro OS
and when you plug the external drive into your computer with xp pro OS
Windows doesn't load your usb external drive , is this correct ?
