Reliable OS?

Windows Vista is reliable and stable.
But it is not best for everyone.

You already say "XP SP2 has been very reliable for me".
So why are you considering upgrading?
What feature of Windows Vista do you need?

"it doesn't seem that a lot of others agree"
I suppose that depends where you get the information.
A newsgroup with a purpose of solving problems is not the best place
any more than going to a hospital and judging the health of the human
race by the health in the hospital.

The fact a newer version of Windows has been released is not a good
enough reason by itself to upgrade.
Windows XP will probably be supported for several more years.

Most have no need to upgrade and should only do so when a hardware or
software requirement need dictate they do so.

"only to find that I get lots of troubles"
The amount of trouble largely depends on your hardware and software
Windows Vista compatibility.
It also depends on how well prepared you and the computer are for an
upgrade.
Many have no problems, but most of those prepared in advance.

From your description, it seems there is no need for you to upgrade
any time soon.

Wow you and Thai are jumping around on this one like the crazed monkeys you
are.

Did you and Dennis find some seedy motel room and spend some time
together? He's starting to over use 'crazy' and you are using crazed.
Sounds like you two exchanged some odd pillow talk. Who was on top,
you or Dennis? Was he any good?

Is that the best you can come up with tonight. Yawn.

Well it's getting late and being an old man I need my beauty rest.

We're still waiting, was Dennis any good or is he just as big a fraud
as a lover and he is as a wannabe computer expert?

Thanks, I appreciate your feedback. However, based on my further reading,
it doesn't seem that a lot of others agree. XP SP2 has been very reliable
for me and I am simply afraid of making the move to Vista only to find
that I get lots of troubles.

Troll.

Well, there is always that possibility... that you'd have problems.
Certainly lots of folks -here- do. That's what this place is for. If you
think that because there are people here saying Vista sucks or that they're
having problems is the best measurement as to whether you should install it
and use Vista, then, by all means, do -not- go and read any of the XP
newsgroups. Because... guess what? All you're going to read about are
problems. Thinking of trying out Ubuntu? Well, then I suggest you stay away
from the Ubuntu ng because, horror of horrors, all you'll see there are
problems.

I do know that you must install two SP's to get VS working under Vista. And
it works. Can't speak to SQL Server. Remote Desktop works fine here. Not
sure what you mean by monitoring? I do know Vista has more system tools than
XP.

Vista has been reliable and dependable for me. I've done clean installs, no
upgrades, on all six systems on which I've installed Vista and spent some
time with it and I've never seen a BSOD on any of those systems. Not one.
(The last BSOD I saw was on an XP system here. Just last week, in fact...) I
like Vista and, yes, there are still issues with it. If your hardware does
not have Vista drivers, well, that's the end of this conversation, no?

Whether you should try Vista or XP is up to you. Do you have an MSDN
subscription? I only ask because you intimate that you'll be developing on
the system. If so, you could give Vista a shot, and if it doesn't meet your
requirements, you could go to XP.

I think further investigation is in order.

Hi crazy.
Do you actually think anyone takes any notice of your ravings other than to
poke fun at you?
I know I shouldn't do, but its so hard to resist.
Sorry. I will try harder to ignore you.

I am in the process of building a new machine used primarily for web and
Windows Server applications. Visual Studio, SQL Server, remote
connectivity, monitoring, etc. Would you consider Vista reliable and
dependable enough to use as a primary OS?

If your primary use is to be web and server applications, then you'll
want to use a server OS. Vista is a client OS.

You won't be able to stop responding since you proved yourself to be a
pompous ass that craves attention. You obviously need to feed that
giant ego of yours, a common fanboy failing, so you'll go right on
being a pompous ass shaking your finger at everybody that disagrees
with your narrow views all the while you do the very things yourself
you find fault with in others. I've seen hundreds of people just like
you in all the years I've followed newsgroups. Your kind NEVER change
because you don't have it within you to admit you have problems with
how you conduct yourself in newsgroups.

You really are crazy aren't you?
You've turned into a raving madman and a pompous big mouth as*hole.

You have seen hundreds like me that haven't shaken their finger at anyone
they disagree with but that you think do?
I knew you were crazy but now you are seeing things too.

BTW the reason we never change is because you are the crazy one.
Even if I change or go away you will just identify someone else to fill your
need.
I know its hard for you but you will never get better until you see that you
have the problem.
