Release Terminal Server Licenses

Dave

I have a Windows 2000 server SP3 running Terminal
Services in application mode.

My issues is that there are only 4 computers that need to
access terminal services. Unfortunately, 2 of the
licenses were issued to temporary machines that no longer
exist and their terminal server connection licenses are
not being released (if it's supposed ot do that).

I have 2 other machines that need to connected to the
server and are being denied because there are no licenses
left to issue because again, there are two licenses taken
up by machines that no longer exist.

I'm rather new at this, so bear with me. How do I
release the two licenses that are designated to two
machines that don't exist and get them issues to the two
machines that do exist?

Thanks.

You can't release licenses. If those licenses were issued
after you installed SP3, then those licenses will be
returned to the free license pool after about 90 days (or
so) from their last use.

Dave.

Thanks for the reply. Okay, so I have to wait for the
licenses to be released in approx. 90 days "or so". Now
here's the obvious question I guess, what am I supposed
to do with the two machines that really exist and need to
connect to the Terminal Server, but can't? Go buy more
licenses? Tell me that I don't have to spend more
money. :)

Thanks.

Found the problem why the Windows 2000 machines were not
getting cals. These machines were upgraded from NT 4
workstations and for whatever reason (according to
another MS tech that called me) the MSLicensing key
permissions in the client registry did not include "full
control" for the "user group" of the machine.

Therefore the perm. cal could not be written to the
registry. We fixed up the permissions for the key and
all is well.

The key I made sure the user has full control permission
to was:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicensing
