Hi,
I'm trying to do a clean, start from scratch reintallation of XP. When I
originally loaded XP onto my system there was never the option to formate C:
first (like 2000 and NT). Now I've got both 2000 and XP. I've created a
MS-DOS boot disk which works but when I try to format C: its says theres an
'active' partition, I'm guessing for the operating systems, and won't let me
format. How do I get around this and then can then install XP?

Thanks muchly for any help,

Carl H

Use the recovery console feature, with this you can enable and disable
services, format drives, read and write data on a local drive (including
drives formatted to use NTFS), and perform many other administrative tasks.

There are two ways to start the Recovery Console:

If you are unable to start your computer, you can run the Recovery Console
from your Setup CD.

As an alternative, you can install the Recovery Console on your computer to
make it available in case you are unable to restart Windows. You can then
select the Recovery Console option from the list of available operating
systems on startup.
After you start the Recovery Console you will have to choose which
installation you want to log on to (if you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot
system) and you will have to log on with your administrator password.

The console provides commands you can use to do simple operations such as
changing to a different directory or viewing a directory, and more powerful
operations such as fixing the boot sector. You can access Help for the
commands in the Recovery Console by typing help at the Recovery Console
command prompt.

Once you are running the Recovery Console, you can get help on the available
commands by typing help at the command prompt.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
