Reinstalling XP on new hardrive with no OS installed

G

Guest

- i have Windows XP SP2 installed on a pentium 2 processor with roughly 32GB
hard disk(s). I upgraded my desktop from 98 to XP using a DELL XP
installation/reinstallation disk, i have run the microsoft piracy test and
it is authentic.(i do NOT have a DELL motherboard installed or purchased)

- i have recenty purchased an intel pentium 4 Dual processor with a
compatible motherboard. Also i bought a 250GB hard drive and a CD/DVDdisk
drive, i am planning to upgrade the desktop to modern specs.

1) i would like to know if i can install the XP again on a clean 250 GB hard
drive?
2) when the PC boots with no OS, will it read the XP CD to install Windows?

If not is there anything i need to do?

Any help will be greatly appreciated as i really havn't a clue but my
knowedge of computers is not bad :D

Many Regards,
Confused

Usually by default the floppy is the first device, simply set to cdrom as 1st
boot device, then load xp cd,save and exit BIOS.

Dell supplied the "generic" version of Windows XP OEM under
its own label until January or February of 2005. After that,
Dell's Windows XP cdrom was bios-locked for only Dell computers.

Yes, but not this particular version. See responses to your
earlier thread, viz., by Ken Blake.

Set the computer to boot from the CD/DVD drive. Setuo runs
from there.

how would i mae the PC boot from the CD/DVD??
(i am in the process of purchasing a brand new XP PRoffesional w/SP 2 :( ,
another £100 grrrrrr)

I'm a student, i don't see how Microsoft seem to think everyone is rich?!?!
I will have spent a total of £300 on my PC at the end, which in my view is
rediculous as im upgrading a desktop, not purchasing a new one.

This is the third or fourth post you've made about this. Again, follow
the very clear instructions in the links I previously gave you. Here
they are again for your convenience:

you will need on-hand

No one is forcing you to use a Microsoft operating system but if you
choose to use their product, you have to pay for it. End of story.

I do not consider a move from a Pentium-2 to a Pentium-D as
an "upgrade". A Pentium-D dual CPU is at least 3 generations
newer than the Pentium-2.

1) Go to store/shop that sells computer software.

2) Purchase either a legitimate version of WinXP, one copy for each
computer to be upgraded.

3) Return to the home.

4) Insert installation CD in PC's CD drive and follow the on-screen
prompts and instructions to install application and desired additional
features.

Well YOU don't see it that way, but it certainly is an upgrade. Who cares
how much newer the cpu/mobo is? It's going into the old box and using older
peripherals.

Well if you don't want to have to pay MickeyMouse you have other FREE
alternatives which end up being much better anyways. You can check out the
alternatives here ...

You very sure about that? It might be going into an older box
but with a new motherboard and chipset that can handle one of
those new Intel CPU's. Probably a new PSU as well...real power-
hungry. Same for RAM. Heck, do the same all the time...still
re-cycling my ancient SuperMicro SC750/760 boxes, er, cases.

wow..... im commiting piracy, i havn't done anything wrong in my life until
now, pisracy... thats big! i hope to try the free versions that NoStop
pointed to me (thankyou) as i feel microsoft is just a little bit expensive
as i only want to upgrade my old computer to modern specs.

i didn't want to pay £200 in upgrades and £100 on a new package.

microsoft, frankly you can shove that package where the sun don't shine. im
rather fustated.

Thanks anyway for those who helped me :D and to make me realize im commiting
piracy :(.

people have told me that i need to change the boot fingy to the CD from the
floppy so it reads the CD first, if so how do i acheive it?

Would i need to download a free Linux fingy on a disk and insert it into a
pc with no OS and that software would act as an OS?

Change the boot order by going into the BIOS. Here are links to help you
with that:

Accessing the BIOS

You are not going to get very far with Linux (or any other operating
system) if you don't make the effort to learn more than "download a
free Linux fingy".

:

What's a "fingy"?

A 'fingy' is a word to describe something your not quite sure about or don't
know how else to put it
You are not going to get very far with Linux (or any other operating

I don't want to have it i was just wandering what to do to get it, is it
better than windows XP?

No kidding! :) But then again, it isn't hard to find grade 5 students that
tend to be a bit confused.
