Reinstalling XP on Dell Dimension

I have a Dell Dimension and I'm having trouble with a few programs. I was told to reinstall Windows XP but I'm not sure I can do it myself, as I've never done something quite so drastic. Can anyone offer help, or direct me to any type of step by step instructions

If your computer is new under warranty call dell they can walk you through it if not your system should have a recovery disk if used your computer should be the same as the day you purchased it (ya lose all programs, games etc...)
