Reinstalling XP Home

If I want to reinstall XP Home on a hard drive that's been in regular use
(NTFS format), i.e., with lots of folders and applications, what will I
likely lose? It's been suggested to me that reinstallation may be the only
way to solve the internet connection issue I'm having, where the servers are
there but I can't get to them all of a sudden. Thanks,

Thanks. I reinstalled Win XP. Did no good. The Local Area Connection
(Comcast) shows itself as Enabled and Connected, but neither browser nor
email client can come up with it. What could be going on? This came on out
of the blue.
