Reinstalling XP after SP1

Jason

Thanks to anybody who can help me with this problem:
Recently, I installed XP Pro Full version onto my
computer and promptly upgraded to SP1, without archiving
my old files. I've been having problems getting my
computer into S3 standby, and after some research, I
found out that I need to have S3 standby enabled before I
install the operating system. It had been set as S1 when
I installed XP, so my only alternative is to reinstall
the operating system, but my setup disk doesn't let me
reinstall because it is version 2002, not SP1. Is there
any way that I can reinstall the operating system from
this disk without wiping out my hard drive first? Thanks
a bunch.

You certainly dont need to enable stand-by before installing xp for
it to function.Usually stand-by wont function is because youre system
isnt up to date, install all from windows update but the obvious, then go
to youre graphic card mfg web site, download all for the card,go to mother-
board mfg web site, dwnload all for board includeing BIOS updates.Youll
soon see standby is available, get latest DIRECT X also.Repairing xp
will put you back to the begining.

1. Check you BIOS - you should have an APM section that allows the system to
Suspend and other related settings.
2. Go Device Manager/Computer see if it is ACPI System (or similar). Should
not be "Standard PC." If it's Standard PC, you'll have to reinstall XP, to
keep it simple.
Does S1 work - Monitor, HDD off?

Both S1 and S3 can be enabled - MS site explains what each ACPI state is.

Well, I did a repair install and that didn't do the
trick. Before I reinstalled, I did update all my drivers,
my OS, and my BIOS...it seems to suspend to S1 state,
because my monitor and HD are shut down...only the fans
are running from what i can tell...

Hmmm,
0: see if the Standby option is available in Start/TurnOFF Computer. If it's
greyed out, it's a HAL.dll problem - not sure, though.
1. see if you get a S3 in SafeMode - it loads minimal drives.
2. unplug, disable one device at a time and see when you get an S3 - I'd
start with the wirless divices, then USB.
3. reassign the Power Switch from ON/OFF to Standby and see what you get; if
it fails, check Event Logs in Adm.Tool/Event Viewer.
4. check each device's PowerSave options: ex:
DeviceManager/Mouse/Properties/PowerManagement/uncheck (or check :) "Allow
this device to bring the computer out of standby" checkbox. Don't forget
USBRootHubs Properties.
5. did you install your Intel SMBus drivers before installing any other
drivers?
