reinstalling windows xp

I've tried to reinstall my windows xp home edition and I get a message that
say:
"Your computer' startup program cannot gain access to the disk containing
the partition or free space you've chosen. Setup cannot install Windows XP on
this hard disk.
This lack of access does not, necessarilly indicate an error condition.
For example, disks attached to a SCSI adapter that wasn't installed by your
computer manufaturer or to a secondary hard disk controler, are, typically,
not visible to the startup program unless special software is used. Contact
your computer or hard disk controller manufacturer for more information.
On x86-based computers, this message may indicate a problem with the CMOS
drive type settings. See your disk controller documentation for more
information."

I am not, at all, computer literate and have no idea what any of this
stuff means. I just want to be able to reinstall my windows because I'm
trying to erase everything on my computer.
Can anyone help? Thank you in advance.

When you boot from the xp cd you will see a message right at the start at
the bottom of the screen that says press f6 to install driver (I can't
remember the exact message but it says f6......) You need to get the driver
file from the motherboard manufaturer and install it to a floppy. Then when
you press f6 windows will have the driver to allow it to see the controller
and hard drive. If you still dsont understand repost with the make/model of
motherboard and someone will try to point you in the right direction. You
might find the CD that came with the motherboard has the necessary files and
instructions.

Thank you Glen but that didn't help. I think it's because of the network
router that I installed but I don't know how to uninstall it to see if that
would fix the problem? I tried using system restore ... to no avail. I tried
uninstalling things that I can easily get back ... to no avail and I tried
what you said ... to no avail. I'm stumped????

I dont understand. How does your network router interfere with reinstalling
windows? Are you trying to install from a network?
