Mandi,

It looks like you may be trying to install an earlier version of Windows
or XP Home. You can't go from Professional to Home unless you do
a clean install.

Thanks for your advise, but how do I do a 'clean install'? That is what I
want to do..
thank you

I too am having this very issue. However I am using the same xp home disk
that I have had since I built this machine and am not using any other OPsys.
Any other solutions?

Mandi,

If you're trying to install WinXP Home Edition, you need to a boot diskette.
If you have a Win98 boot disk, that will work fine. If you do not have one,
go to www.bootdisk.com and you can download one there. After you've done
that, go into your BIOS and set it to boot from the floppy drive. You
should
end up with an A:\ prompt. This is where you'll type "FDISK" without the
quotes.
Type Y to enable support for a large drive. After this, it should give you
4 choices.
Select the one that says "delete a non-dos partition". It'll ask you a
couple of basic
yes or no questions and you should answer accordingly (I'm trying to do this
totally
from memory). After it's confirmed that the partition has been deleted,
reboot and
re-enter the BIOS. Change the boot order back to the CD-Rom. At this time,
insert
the operating system you're trying to install and reboot again. If you're
reinstalling WinXP
Home, press any key to enter setup and follow the on screen prompts.

Before you do any of this, make sure that everything you need is backed up.

Post back your results. Let us know if you need more help.

Cindy,

Since you already have the XP disc, you can just go into the BIOS, and
select
the cd-rom as the first boot device. Insert the XP disc, reboot, and press
any
key to boot from the disc and follow the on screen prompts.

Post back results.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

No, this is completely unnecessary. A boot diskette is a thing of the
past, as all legitimate WinXP installation CDs are already bootable.

Also completely unnecessary. FDisk is an old MS-DOS utility that is
neither available or needed in WinXP. All legitimate WinXP installation
CDs have the capability of deleting and creating partitions.

Hi Bruce,

I agree, but in her inital post she got an error saying she couldn't install
because she got an error saying setup couldn't continue because the version
of Windows was newer than the one she was installing. I wasn't aware that
setup could continue in this case. Please advise further. Thanks.

Thanks new...
I would do this if I could get that far. I really should go into further
detail here. Several times on start up of XP it shows all the HD's
proceesors.. , etc, ect.. then boots into the initial XP screen with the
moving bar that goes back and forth. I can sit and watch this thing
gradually slow down and then stop. Nothing. There is no going forward.
Reboot the machine... Same thing.
I go to try to get into safe mode... Nada, nope, It starts spitting out
what looks like reading partition and driver info ( Its actually on my boot
ini / log btw) then stops dead..
Ok.. Lets try the recovery disks... Load it, boot machine.. goes through
all 6 floppies.. MAYBE it will boot into windows but unlikely, most of the
time it will stall on the last disk. Then it MAY boot into the trouble of
not going beyond the initial windows screen (see problem one)
Last lets try the XP cd to see if I can boot from xp. Nope. It goes
through the checking hardware.. ect.. then after all this, IF I get that
far, it tells me I have a newer version on my HD than whats on the disk...
OR it wont allow me to boot into windows again.. Its a vicious circle.
I just want to boot into windows normally again. I dont want to
reformat.. Just repair.
