I bought a Gateway laptop whilst on vacation in New York
and am having problems where I need to reinstall Windows.
However, I am unable to locate the Operating Disc and
Gateway are now saying that they do not ship to London,
so I cannot purchase a replacement.
Has anyone had the same problem and how did they overcome
it without returning to the US?
Thanks.

I think you are going to have to complain up the ladder until you get to a supervisor of manager who will listen. It is there packing mistake and they owe it to you. If they want to tack on a reasonable fee for the extra shipping charges I suppose a person would have to go along with that, but they need to make and effort to make this right.

Well you could just use any XP disk as long as it's the
same as you have on your system. You didn't say what you
have, If you have XP Home OEM then that is what you need
to use, your key should be on a sticker under the
computer. A laptop has lot's of propritary drivers, like
for the touch pad that XP does not have , so you could do
a repair install and leave them. Take it to a computer
shop for some help if necessary.

I have a home computer with the same problem - or is it??

I wanted to reinstall the windowsXP home which was OEM on my machine.
I have the supplied disc and also the product hologram and ref number on the
back of the machine.
when I go into installing it asks fro the ref number - 25 digits in batches
of 5. The next screen tells me that is the incorrect number and I have to
close down -- What is wrong??

Is this the wrong disc?
Wrong code?

Since XP came installed on your computer, you need to contact the vendor
that sold you the computer.

Greetings --

You need to examine the Product Key very carefully. It's awfully
easy to mistake a "B" for an "8," a "G" for a "6," an "S" for a "5,"
or a "Q" for a "0" or "O." Fortunately, Microsoft had the good sense
to leave the "1's," "I's," "O's," and "0's" out of the equation.
Also, be sure that your CapsLock if _off_ while entering the Product
Key.
