I replaced a dead AMD mainboard/CPU with Intel P4. The
Intel board/CPU doesn't like the XP install on the hard
drive. Can I reinstall XP Pro and do I have to re-
register? If so, what do I have to do?

Hi Ian,

Do a repair installation, and yes, you will need to reactivate (not a big
deal though, if it balks, just follow the phone-in prompts and explain what
you did). Follow these steps to do a repair install which should preserve
your data, settings, and programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.

Hi Ian,

Windows Product Activation includes an additional three-day grace period to
re-activate after significant hardware changes.

Yes, you can reinstall XP Pro. Registration is optional. You will have
to activate once the reinstall is complete. If it fails to activate
automatically over the internet, choose the option to activate by phone.
It will be pretty simple either way.

Greetings --

Normally, and assuming either a retail license or a generic
(non-branded) OEM license, unless the new motherboard is virtually
identical to the old one (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same
BIOS version, etc.), you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place
upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.
