Reinstalling Vista without an Internet connection

S

SEH

My son purchased a laptop for college in August. Recently he installed Unix
on it and now he cannot connect to the Internet. How can he reinstall Vista
on his machine without having to purchase Vista? His computer came with
Vista, so it seems like he should be able to get it somehow. Of course, the
quicker he can do this the better.

Most Laptops have a Recovery Partition that is activated by means of pushing
F something during the boot process.
All Laptops come with Manuals that explain this procedure for reinstalling
the original operating system and all programs that came with the original
purchase.
This Recover/Reinstallation process usually wipes everything on the HD and
restores to "just purchased" condition.

You know what they say...if all else fails read the
instructions...............

The laptop mftr. was required to provide a method for returning the
laptop to factory condition. Refer to the laptop manual as to how to do
this. If you don't have a manual, go to the laptop mftr.'s website for
that specific model and the answer will be there. If the laptop had a
recovery partition and your son damaged it, order physical restore
CD/DVDs from the laptop mftr. This is usually quite inexpensive.

Thanks so much. My son didn't think he had other options. I'll have him look
into this.

Thanks for your reply. I'll have my son check this out. He didn't think he
had other options.

You'd think a college student would be able to read the manual that
came with the computer and follow the manufacturer's instructions for
restoring the OS.

Download pirate copy of Vista, and use numbers of your Vista sticker on
bottom of laptop.
He probably will have to call MS to activate it. over internet won't work

I hope this response is just a bad joke.

Speaking of bad jokes....

I wouldn't blame your son at all for disliking VISTA, but to erase it for Linux
(or Unix) rather than creating a dual-bootable scenario might have been
considered a bit airheaded. ;-)

He has a configuration or a settings issue. Unix is generally used as an
internet *server*... it's pretty much made for that purpose.

If his PC came with VISTA, there shouild have been a set of recovery discs
included from the OEM builder. There may also still be a recovery 'partition'
on the hard drive. He will need these discs or he will need to contact the
manufacturer for instructions.

However, if he gets no joy... there is a $100 option... by purchasing and using
a VISTA Home Basic Upgrade.

Why buy DVD when you can download it for free.
You can find Vista OEM DVD, use it with numbers from your Vista OEM sticker
on your laptop.

David, if you think it's a bad joke then tell me why?.

All Vista DVD are same. It's up to serial number that you type to get
different versions of it.

buhhhaaaaaaa
Pirate or not, all he needs is a copy of Vista. He already has product key
on laptop.

The product key on his laptop is unique to the special version of Vista OEM
which is unique for that Laptop manufacturer it will not work the retail
version of Vista OEM.

It worked for me with Asus laptop (same story as OT)
All Vista DVDs are same. It's up to product key what gets installed.

C

Curious

Interesting, In any case if he uses the same product key on another system
it may not activate and when phone activation is used to activate it then
the original laptop installation will not longer be fully activated and only
critical updates will be available.

Illegal copies are illegal. Either the system will not have full
functionality, or it will not activate.

The only illegal thing here is your existence in this forum.
He needs DVD Vista copy. Why pay to MS or computer manufacturer, when it
should be provided for free.
When you buy software you get
medium (DVD or CD) or electronic copy
serial number (if required)

You don't buy software to get only serial number, and then pay additional
price to get medium. Do you?
When you try to help people, don't tell them false info.

I believe that you misunderstood David.
He was pointing out that when you purchase Vista software on DVD it comes
with a product key(license) which belongs to you and you can use it one PC.
When you purchase a system with Vista already installed the system comes
with a product key/license which belongs to the system and not to you.
I believe with Vista that it is also possible to purchase a product
key/license without media over the net which will work with the purchased
Vista software that you already have.

No... he need a VISTA DVD.... not a "copy".

Because it's the property of Microsoft, and it's a LAW, dumbass.
When you try to help people, don't tell them false info.

And I sould advise you that software piracy illegal.... so when you claim to
"help" people, inciting them to become criminals is less than legitimate.

I believe the 'key' word here is "purchase".
