Reinstalling dial-up networking on XP

Andrew

I've just upgraded to broadband which worked well for a
few days then would not connect. My ISP tried a number of
things eventually telling me that I should re-install
dial-up networking but then refused to take me through
how to do this (great service!)
My computer knowledge is basic and I have no idea how to
do this in windows XP - I've trawled through Microsoft
articles but nothing seems to work - the restore facility
was switched off. Any ideas gratefully received.

Your ISP is mistaken. Windows XP doesn't have a separate "dial-up
networking" component, so it isn't possible to un-install or
re-install it. That advice only applies to Windows 95, 98, and Me.

Can you talk to a different person at your ISP who understands XP
better?

Thanks Steve, I tried my ISP again & even spoke to a
supervisor but they are adamant that this is possible
with Windows XP - of course they would not give me any
detail of how this can be done as it extends beyond their
narrow band of support.

I'm sorry that you're having such trouble, Andrew. You deserve better
support from your ISP.

I think that the fact that they want you to do something but can't
tell you how to do it speaks for itself.

There's no such thing as a separate "dial-up networking" component in
Windows XP. It isn't possible to un-install or re-install "dial-up
networking".

You can open the Network Connections folder, delete a particular
dial-up connection, and create a new dial-up connection.

However, most broadband Internet connections (e.g. cable modems)
appear in Network Connections as "LAN or High-Speed Internet"
connections, not "Dial-up" connections. What type of broadband
service do you have? I would only expect a "Dial-up" connection if
you have a DSL service that uses PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet).

You could post a message in this news group with complete details of
your broadband connection and the problem that you're having, and
someone might be able to tell you how to solve it.

Can you switch to a different ISP?

Thanks Steve. For info having trawled through other posts
on this newsgroup I came across a number of references to
a program called WINSOCKXPFIX which I downloaded, ran and
it appears to have solved the issue - my connection is
now up and running.
Many thanks for taking the time to reply though.

You're welcome, Andrew. Nice going! Tell your ISP the solution, and
bill them for the time that you spent researching and solving the
problem. :-)

My ISP tried a number of
things eventually telling me that I should re-install
dial-up networking ...

As has been pointed out, this is nonsense.
but then refused to take me through
how to do this (great service!)

Who is your ISP? Perhaps this is a good time to change.

If you connect to their support pages, there is usually a page on how to
create a DUN connection manually, if not ask again.

Hey, just read this article and as a heads up, knowing myself because
do work for MSN dial-up tech support. AS it is true most "Agents" d
not know how to fix winsock in windows xp and it isn't a seperate par
of windows that you can uncheck in "windows componants" restart the
re-check, it still is possible to in essence "re-install" it as yo
have found in the program.

On the part of billing your ISP for the cost of researching it...yo
could try but I doubt it would work, also it's not that they as
company don't know how to fix it, it is that they don't offer trainin
in that field to their tech support and they have strict (all ISP's do
support boundries that have to be maintained. If you had an earlier O
then they could have helped you but as soon as it was determined wha
your problem was and that they weren't ALLOWED to help you re-instal
it because it is an OEM or OS problem(IE you get to talk to them no
...how fun:S) they sent you on their way...

Also if you ask they WILL create a DUN for you...but if your Dial-u
networking is hooped there is no chance it can work...a good way t
test for this is to Ping a URL such as yahoo.com then ping it's I
address (66.94.231.99) and if you can get through on the IP but not th
URL then you HAVE to get winsock fixed otherwise nothing will work to
well for you...again just to qwell the people in this forum who stat
it's nonsense to be told to re-install dial-up networkign in wi
xp...it can be done, just not as easy as before (and it's more of a fi
not a re-install) and that no ISP will help you with win xp dial u
networking
Anywho glad you got it fixed, but thought maybe you wouldn't be so har
on them if you knew that all ISP's are like that (except maybe a smal
town comp repair shop
