reinstalling an "oem" Vista from disk

B

Bernard North

Dear All,

I was stupid enough to switch my computer off while it was updating windows
and now I get the windows boot manager on start up telling me I have a
problem.
I know I need to reinstall from disk.
I have a disk but its a "one machine" version" ie "Microsoft Windows Vista -
Home Premium Edition - oem".
Will I have problems doing this ?
I haven't yet tried as my DVD drive is currently jammed.

I've has this PC just under 3 months and really hope I haven't got to
contact the PC maker as I am already in a "warranty" standoff with them over
the jammed DVD drive (and the graphics card which was faulty on delivery)
and, dare I say, they haven't got a good reputation for customer service.

many many thanks for any advice

Although you have a disk, you would be better served by restarting to the
Safe Mode boot menu (F8 after BIOS screen, during 'black screen', before the
windows logo.), where you may find options to use that disk in a file saving
'repair'

I know I need to reinstall from disk.

You should boot from the vista dvd and try some of the repair options it
has...

it even has system restore there....

why reinstall if you can save your current installation?

If it's the same OEM version that came with the machine (assuming you are
able to get the DVD drive to work), you should not have any problems
re-installing license-wise.

You shouldn't have a problem with the OEM disk. You can usually reinstall
Windows on the machine the disk is for as many times as you like, depending
on the manufacturer. You're going to need a DVD drive to reinstall Windows
though. You're going to have to get that DVD drive working again.

I'm not sure exactly what type of error you're getting on boot but you might
want to try reverting to the last known good configuration.

This might get you up and running again.

Most Vista installed systems hard drives are partitioned such so an
installation disk isn't actually required. While the system is starting up,
press and hold the F11 key or after it starts, in your "All Prams" menu
there's "PC Help & Tools". Either way you have opt to re-install it to it's
"out-of-the-box" state by re-installing individual programs or the entire
system itself. I recommend buying an external hard drive in case you have
to do the later in the future. Hope this helps.
