Reinstalled XP

I ahve a dell Insp 8600 and was working fine till I got a blue screen and an
unbootable_mount_disk error ata random time. My work It etch said to reload
Windows. SO I got Dell to send me a XP pr disk and went through the setup.
My tech said I would not lose my old programs etc if I just reloaded windowns
but now that I have everythnng seems gone . The only hing that was bit
weird was the partition it said I should trynad load it to. I had one that
was nearly full and one that was virtually free so I put it on there thinking
I would not delete any of my old stuff. Is ther anyway of getting the old
prgrams and files back - it has some digital photo and a copy of my ffice
products on it for which I don't have replcement cd's. Or was I just stupid
and deleted everything

If you re-installed Windows (instead of repairing it) then
you will have to re-install your various applications.

What exactly do you mean with "I should trynad load it to"?

Hello,

If you installed XP to a partition that does not have your data, and you did
not select to format any of your drives, the data should still be in your C
Drive.

Look for a Documents and Settings folder in your C Drive, click on your user
name > my documents > my pictures and see if your stuff are there.

Also, do you get any menu when you startup? If so, select the other OS when
prompted and you should be back to your old operating system.

I understand I will have to reload applications. But I was under the
impression is I was just reinstalling windows I would not lose everything
else. I had a whole bunch of digital photos which now don't seem to be there.
Can I access a different partition than the one I loaded windows onto? When
Iw as gong through the setup stage of windows it showed me a coule of
partitions. One had 99.9% free so I used that. But would my old programs
etc be on the other partition and hence ow I can't see them?

Re-installing Windows will not erase your existing data files
unless you elect to format the target partition.

Unless you tell us your partition structure, we cannot tell you
where your photos might be. Did you have a look at the
various subfolders in c:\Documents and Settings?

Keeping irreplaceable data in one location only is very
risky. It should be backed up regularly, e.g. weekly, to an
independent medium, especially before a major operation
such as a Windows repair/reload. A 2.5" disk in an external
USB case makes for a low-cost but highly effective backup
medium.
