ok, i'm a bonehead. didn't think about what i was doing and now i'm in
trouble. 13 year old daughter uninstalled some things she shouldn't have and
some of the shared files affected xp - got some very weird errors, during
shutdown, start up, basic use - too many to remember. back in the 98 days,
i would reinstall the operating system and all files and programs stayed the
same. so without further ado, that is what i did with xp. now xp loads just
fine, but it tells me i don't have audio, among other basic needs, and will
not let me install them or find them using "search for new hardware". The
start menu>all programs shows just the basics like it would after a clean
install after reformat. Yet when I go to explorer and look into program
files, all programs and files are still there but none will start or open.
Duing boot up, thought maybe there were two xp operating systems installed,
but it only gives me the one option. there is a duplicate user name but it
says randyscomputer after the name and it's like a brand new user with no
settings. the old user with the same name gives me an error when i click on
it that this file is not accessible. is there a way out of the stupidity i
did? i just wanted to repair the missing os files and not have to reload or
mess with any programs or files. reformatting and reinstalling everything
from point 0 is what i'm trying to avoid. i have a basic understanding of
computers, just enough to be dangerous. has anyone seen this problem before
or have i created a new stupidity level?

You will have to reinstall your applications. Your data should have been
untouched with a repair install of Windows or a Windows installation without
format and partition of the hard drive.
